An Illustrious History

The Hendy name has been well respected on the South Coast for over 100 years - from small beginnings selling clothes and bicycles, to the  Hendy Group today.

The company is proud to have the history of being Britain' s first Ford dealer and it’s an association that has gone from strength to strength - to this day Ford accounts for 85% of the company’s business. Currently, both Chairman and Deputy Chairman are great-grandsons of the company founder F.A. Hendy, with the next generation of sons and daughters within the company structure re-assuring the continuity of the business – even with sales in excess of £200m, the Hendy Group to this day remains a tight knit family concern.

Key dates:

1859 Frederick A Hendy opened a small bicycle and outdoor clothing shop in Whitchurch, Hampshire , UK .

1898 The decision was made to take on the agencies for Benz and Bolle and the Company began to sell cars all over the UK.

1910 Percy Hendy signed a dealership contract with Henry Ford and the Hendy Group became the first official Ford Main dealer in Britain.

1913 – 1918 During the First World War, the Nations Food Production Department put the Company’s skills to good use by servicing and maintaining Fordson Tractors.

1939 – 1945 During the Second World War, after expansion and gaining larger and more versatile sites, the Ministry of Aircraft Production requisitioned the Hendy Group premises to assemble the famous Merlin Spitfire engines.

1990 Always looking to the future and new business prospects, the Company is now operating six car main dealer sites in Hampshire and West Sussex and six truck sites from Hampshire to Devon along with fourteen daily rental operations in Southern England .

1996 For the first time since its association with Benz and Bolle in the early 1900’s, the group took on the dealership responsibilities for another car manufacturer – the emerging Japanese company Honda. Hendy Honda, an independent sales and servicing operation, was set up in the West Country City of Exeter.

1998 The company’s 100th birthday year in the motor trade. The company’s one hundredth year witnessed a move into new custom designed Group administration offices in Chandlers Ford and the construction of a new purpose built Hendy Ford Dealership in Chichester , West Sussex . Thus by the end of its centenary the company’s Ford dealership operations had increased considerably.

1999 To expand the rental side of the company Hendy took the opportunity to purchase the business of Salisbury based AVH Truck Rentals Limited and with the additional purchase of Western Truck and Van Co. Limited, the Company’s geographical are of business influence was significantly widened.

2004 Following from the success of Hendy Honda, the growing Mazda brand was added to our franchise portfolio, and has become a strong addition to the Group based at our Winchester dealership.

2006 During 2006, Hendy Mazda has expanded and has taken on a dealership in Hiltingbury, Chandlers Ford, and Kia has also been incorporated into the expanding franchise portfolio of the Hendy Group.
