Two years ago, Paul (our in-house performance expert) decided to buy himself an imported Honda Integra DC-5 with a standard 2 litre, 220bhp engine. Of course, this wasn’t enough for Paul so he embarked upon an epic tuning quest to create the ultimate monster.
From the moment Paul saw the Integra, he knew what he had to do. Improving on such an already powerful car is no easy task, so drawing on the years of experience he has working with Hondas he began work…
First off… Power! There wasn’t enough of it! The best place to start with car tuning is the engine. Once you’ve got that where you want it, you can modify the other areas of the vehicle to match the power output.
The staple of any high-performance car is the air flow through the engine so a High-flow air filter was a must have. Still on the induction, Paul’s next move was to add a Jackson Racing Supercharger, which was a huge commitment to make due to the cost and the amount of other changes that need to be made to compensate for all that extra power. Changes like the fuel injectors; an expensive part that needed to be replaced by even bigger ones! Staying on the fuel system; the fuel pump had to be upgraded. To keep order in all of the madness, a Hondata K-Pro ECU was installed.
To make sure the wheels were going to keep up with the engine, Paul decided on a Stage 1 Competition Clutch and weight-reduced Flywheel which would give him the confidence to put the car through its paces.
Before going anywhere near a track, the car’s suspension needed a massive overhaul. Starting underneath; Eibach Coil-overs and control arms gave the Integra a lower stance. To complement the low ride-height, Eibach front and rear camber arms were fitted. This is known as a Fast Road Set-up. The inside is just as important as the outside in performance cars, so a full roll-cage was installed, keeping the car nice and rigid.
While inside the car, Paul completely stripped the interior. Seats, dashboard, steering wheel, airbags, carpet… absolutely everything that would weigh the car down was removed. This left plenty of room to rebuild the whole interior starting with a lightweight dashboard, which was flocked to prevent glare from the sun. Next came the hugely sought after bucket-style Recaro Pole Position seats, and to keep him firmly planted in the car; a genuine set of Takata harnesses, all the way from Japan.
By the end, the Integra looks stunning, but what about the performance? Was all the hard work worth it in the end?
Of course it was! The engine was now putting down 320bhp and with a last minute idea to switch on the Launch Control in the ECU; the car shredded 0-60mph in just under 4.9 seconds, rightfully earning it a place up on high in the Honda tuning scene.
Paul has now sold the car (making someone very happy) and is currently working a new project: A Civic EK-9… So watch this space!
