Travelling Green
You can, without rushing out and buying a new vehicle straight away, be more green with your current vehicle by following a few very simple practices.
-
Make sure that your tyres are at their optimum pressure. If your tyres are even slightly lower than they should be, this causes more friction and then more fuel to move, so the CO2 emissions will be higher than needed
-
Keep your revs low. By going through your gears at a lower rev you can greatly reduce the amount of CO2 which is emitted. With diesel vehicles, their optimum usage comes when you do not go over 2,000rpm, and go up and down the gears smoothly when coming to junctions. With petrol it is best to keep under 3,5000rpm.
-
Try not to drive if it can be helped If at all possible, walk, ride a bike or catch a bus to where you need to go. The first two will not only mean you are not throwing any emissions into the atmosphere but you are also getting some exercise. And many bus companies are now running a fleet which run on a greener fuel.
-
Keep your car clean. By keeping your car clean on the inside helps dramatically with emissions. As extra items in the car add to the weight of the vehicle and so more effort is needed by the engine to keep the vehicle moving, so causing more fuel to be used.
