Biodiesel is a bio fuel which has a totally environmentally fiendly life cycle. It is produced from crops which primarily make oil products, it is then taken through a process to have it form into the fuel which can be used. The fuel will still burn off CO2 and other bi products but to the same volume as the crops which create it need to grow, so making it almost a perfect “circle of life” fuel.
One of the main disadvantages to biodiesel is that it has a low density. This means that on cold mornings the density of the fuel will hinder the starting of the vehicle; hence today there is still a volume of fossil based diesel present in the fuel to enable the ignition of the engine. However this is not a major set back and with the technology we have today it is hoped that this problem will have a solution to enable 100% biodiesel to be used in the near future.
Another concern with biofuel on a whole is the amount of crops which will have to be grown to sustain the demand. The impact of more natural forests and land being taken over for farming could cause a detrimental effect on the already delicate eco system which could result in a further loss of species and natural habitat across the globe, but if this is recognized as a risk and stringent controls are kept then this can be disbanded.
Biodiesel is today in a small amount at fuelling stations. 5% of some diesel fuels are made up of biodiesel, and it would be a small modification for your vehicle to run purely on biodiesel.
