Produced by fermenting plant material, bioethanol is a petrol substitute that, when used, reduces overall CO2 emissions. All petrol cars can run on E5 (a ready mixed blend of 5 per cent bioethanol and 95 per cent petrol). You should only use blends of more than five per cent if your car has been specifically designed to run on ethanol. Although not yet widely available in the UK, bioethanol is likely to become more popular in the next few years. By 2010, all petrol sold in the UK will contain five per cent bioethanol.
Bioethanol is not new to the industry and has a long standing history with the Ford company, as Henry Ford, realizing the short future of fossil fuels built some of the early Model T versions between 1910 and 1920 to run on bioethanol, but due to the high price of the bio-fuel back then it was quashed by the ever popular fossil based Fuels.
Ford have rectified Henry Ford’s vision with the production of the Focus and C-Max FFV, once again taking up the gauntlet with other manufacturers to get bioethanol used as a more primary fuel source for our vehicles.
Currently vehicles are able to run on a 5% base of bioethanol, and can run on the 85% base of bioethanol and 15% petrol, hence it being called E85, with a small conversion kit.
With the supermarket chain, Morrisons, selling the fuel in the UK it is finally starting to become a stronger contender in the market of alternative fuels, but is still not widely available. A list of filling stations which currently supply E85 are below and we will endeavor to update this list when new locations become available:
Currently the Government have introduced some discounts schemes with vehicle excise duty, fuel duty, and company car. The details are as follow:
Manufacturers are keen for the government to higher these discounts further to encourage more businesses and the general consumer to use bioethanol cars in the future, and with the progress of the fuel being available this will hopefully be achieved in the future budgets.
