The Maritime Warfare Centre Raises £5,000 for Help for Heroes!
A five strong team from the Maritime Warfare Centre, Collingwood successfully completed a gruelling 12 day cycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End, raising a remarkable £5,000 for Help for Heroes.
Averaging between 80-100 miles of cycling a day, the team consisted of Chief Petty Officer Steve Edwards, Commander Gavin MacDougall, Mr Jeremy Walters, Commander Richard Buckland and Lieutenant Commander David Iliffe.
Commander Richard Buckland comments: “We have had an extremely exciting journey and have met some sensational people. There were times when the going was tough, but we were driven on by our sponsors and knowing that we were helping to raise a significant amount of money for a truly worthy cause.”
The Hendy Group which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year was able to help by donating a van, which was used to transport the support team, equipment and food during the cycle ride.
Commander Richard Buckland continues: “Burning 6,000 calories at each stage of the ride – the use of the van was crucial, as it allowed us to enjoy high energy delights such as pasta, meatballs and even crème brulee!”
The money which has been raised will be donated to Help for Heroes and will assist in the rehabilitation and support of servicemen and women. One of the charity’s initiatives likely to benefit will be the development of a new swimming complex at Headley Court.
