Hendy sets the pace as Belgian Rally Championship gets underway
Treacherous weather conditions, tricky stages and one of the longest rallies of the season were on the agenda at the weekend for south coast rally driver Steve Hendy.
The Belgian National Rally Championship got underway with one of the toughest events of the season – the East Belgian Rally with Steve and co-driver Aled Davies finishing an impressive second in Group A and comfortably within the top 10.
“That was an extremely tough event,’’ said Steve at the end of the two day rally. “We completed nearly 250 competitive stage kilometres together with some long road sections linking the stages.’’
A mixture of heavy rain and dry spells made tyre choice difficult and road conditions unpredictable. However the Hankook-shod Focus WRC never missed a beat all weekend and the pair were delighted to get their championship efforts off to a good start.
“We were looking at a top five finish at one point but spun on the final stage. We got stuck and lost so much time but we are happy to have finished 8th overall and more importantly second in the Group A category.’’
Steve said the pair knew conditions were going to be tricky during the recce before the event got underway. “Its great to have a chance to drive on the stages before the competition gets underway but even in a road car at normal speed we knew it was going to be tough.’’
With just a short break until action resumes the team heads back to Belgium next month for the TAC Rally based in Tielt, a two day event which gets underway on April 5.
