All the elements that make up the Mazda2's unique character combine to such effect that it can hold its own against a field of 38 other cars - and scoop the top accolade.
Great to look at, fun to drive and economical to run, the Mazda2 also has uncompromising environmental standards, illustrated in its receiving the highest WCOTY environment score.
These attributes led a jury of 47 international automotive journalists to name the Mazda2 as their World Car of the Year, beating the short-listed Ford Mondeo and Mercedes C-Class. Previous winners of this coveted award include the Lexus LS460, BMW 3-Series and Audi A6.
The stylish Mazda2 was also one of the three finalists for 2008 World Design of the Year, alongside Volvo C30 and Audi R8.
Of course, Mazda is delighted with this prestigious award. But most of all, we hope that the new Mazda2 will become YOUR car of the year.

The new Mazda 2 3-door will incorporate a new rear window design and an optional sports appearance package with a special front bumper design and side sills that visually lower the car’s centre of gravity, and a rear roof spoiler.
On the inside, the Mazda 2 3-door's sporty theme continues with Recaro seats in racy red and black two-tone, and matching red stitching on the leather steering wheel with a painted bezel. The door trims have leather inserts and panels in special paint.
Powertrains – low consumption and low CO2 emissions
Power will come from the same engines used in the 5-door model including two 1.3 petrol engines, one of which has more power, and a 1.5-litre version with 103 PS and can manage a frugal 47.9 mpg with low emissions of 140 g/km.
For the ultimate economy, customers can order a MZ-CD 1.4-litre common-rail turbo diesel. This engine produces 68ps at 4000rpm and 160Nm of torque at a low 2000 rpm for lively acceleration. At the same time, it achieves a remarkable 65.7mpg (combined cycle) and produces a very low 114 g/km of CO2 for low operating costs. All the engines will be mated to a 5-speed gearbox but with higher ratio's than its 5-door partner to improve fuel consumption.
There's a stunning interior, with quality plastics and a design that betrays its humble origins. The easy-to-read speedo and tacho dominate the instrumentation, while the centre console has plenty of stowage space.
Large dial-like switches are easy to operate, while the front seats have been moved apart to improve elbow room and offer better comfort. An all-new split glovebox design with removable rubbish bin helps keep the interior tidy.
The back seat can accommodate two tall passengers easily, while the rear door design makes getting in and out simple. There's plenty of luggage space, too, as the collapsible seat back frees up enough room to carry two mountain bikes. And a 50mm lower rear bumper height means loading and unloading is easy.
The 2 proves equally impressive on the road. Featuring MacPherson strut front suspension and a newly devised torsion beam rear axle, it offers swift steering and impressive body control. The result is a car that turns in quicker than its predecessor, remains flatter in corners thanks to body roll suppressing geometry, and maintains its chosen line better than any rival.
