Service men and women can apply for a Civilian Work Attachment (CWA) at Hendy | January 2019

The Hendy Group is proud to work in alongside the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to help those leaving the Armed Forces gain practical experience in the motor industry.

We hold a bronze award on the Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme, which allows us to support the Service community including the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Marines with our signed Armed Forces Covenant. Service men and women can apply for a Civilian Work Attachment (CWA) at Hendy. This is unpaid work experience within the company, during which time Service leavers get on-the-job training and an insight into what working in a busy civilian work environment is like. At the start of December, Warrant Officer Class 2 and Quartermaster Sergeant Instructor Andrew Bracey joined Hendy Ford in Fareham for a week-long placement.

He said: "After completing my Warrant Officer/SNCO Career Transition Workshop (CTW) in Tidworth and in conjunction with my resettlement officer one-to-one interview, an opportunity to attend a CWA in a possible new career stream (motor industry) was presented to me. After compiling a CV and a covering letter this was sent off via the CTP website to the Hendy Group." Andrew added: "Under manager Steve French I was allowed the chance to work under all department heads. This has allowed me to see how both the sales executives and the service teams work in all their day-to-day business.

"This has been a massive help to myself in determining if this possible new career is the right choice for me. Steve's employees have been professional, honest and most courteous to me during my CWA, especially James and Fraser (service) and Sacha and Tony (sales)." Hendy has a wide range of roles available across the organisation that could be a good fit for Service leavers.

Fareham New Car Sales Manager Steve French and Customer Service Manager Frazer Cook said:

"Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Andrew Bracey boasts a full military career serving 23 years in the Royal Engineers. WO2 Bracey is nearing the end of his service and has enrolled with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to assist him through his resettlement process into civilian employment.

"Andrew embraced the opportunity to become involved with all the departments within the dealership [and] was surprised as to how similar our working processes are to his current military role.

"Starting the week with the Sales Department, New Car Sales Manager Steve French introduced Andrew to the art of selling new vehicles. The latter half of the week was spent with the Service department to encounter the fast-paced Aftersales Operation."

They added: "Although civilian employment greatly differs from military employment, skills learnt during a military career are invaluable. Just having the ability to turn up to a job on time, dressed correctly, with the right attitude to go the extra mile.

"Andrew benefited from seeing dealership life from all angles and thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Hendy team."
