The Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv D MHEV has been crowned as the ‘Large SUV of the Year’ in the News UK Motor Awards.

This high-profile recognition underscores the remarkable strides made by Mazda in refining diesel engines, with its e-Skyactiv D unit being one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world. It also comes hot on the heels of the Mazda CX-60’s recognition as ‘Car of the Year’ and ‘Best Large SUV’ in the 2023 Diesel Car Magazine Awards and ‘Best Fleet Large SUV’ in the 2023 Fleet World Awards.

Now in its sixth year, the News UK Motor Awards celebrate the best new vehicles across a huge range of segments. The diesel CX-60 emerged victorious in a fiercely competitive category, following rigorous testing by automotive experts from publications like The Sunday Times, The Sun, Driving.co.uk and Luxx Magazine.

Here at Hendy, we were delighted to see the Mazda CX-60 win this award, which is a testament to Mazda’s unwavering dedication to engine development. It also shows that the appeal of diesel continues to endure, despite coming to the end of the road in 2035.

One of the cleanest diesel engines in the world

Introduced to the UK market in March, the all-new in-line six-cylinder 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel-powered CX-60 offers low emissions and excellent fuel efficiency with high levels of torque. It features Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI) Technology, which makes the unit one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world.

This stunning SUV exemplifies Mazda’s commitment to offering a wide range of sustainable mobility solutions and the principal of the ‘right solution at the right time’. It offers the perfect solution for many private buyers, higher-mileage drivers or anyone who tows regularly, as it boasts a 2,500kg braked towing capacity, optional semi-electric tow bar, Trailer Stability Control and towing mode to ensure complete stability.

Commenting on the award, The Sun’s Motors Editor Rob Gill said:

“The Mazda CX-60 is our stand-out winner as Large SUV of the Year as it really does everything for everybody. Practical, stylish, packed with all the tech and luxuries we love as standard, and powered by the cleanest and most efficient diesel engine in the world. Anyone who tows anything or travels big miles every week to earn a crust needs a CX-60 in their life. It’s as simple as that.”

High power, low emissions

The Mazda CX-60 delivers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency, alongside the driver-focused handling, impressive comfort and high quality found across the Mazda range.

Available in three meticulously crafted model grades – Exclusive-Line, Homura, and Takumi – the Mazda CX-60’s imposing design effortlessly combines the elegance of the brand’s KODO design language with the robustness of a front-engine, rear-wheel drive SUV architecture.

The inclusion of the new 48V Mazda M Hybrid Boost system ensures high output and impressive fuel economy, with both DCPCI and Mazda M Hybrid technologies contributing to the SUV’s fuel efficiency and low emissions.

The popular Mazda CX-60 line-up also comprises a plug-in hybrid CX-60, which features a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and a 17.8kWh high-capacity battery.

Commenting on the Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv D’s award success, Mazda Motors UK’s Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said:

“Another demonstration of Mazda’s ‘Multi-Solution Approach’, the new diesel is designed to meet the needs of customers who want an efficient, long-distance driving car with great towing capacity. So, it’s great that the car has been acknowledged in the 2023 Motor Awards.”
