Electrifying IONIQ 5 surges to the top of the UK Car of the Year Awards
Published 21 Mar 22

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 stormed onto the scene last summer –  to both driver and critical acclaim, winning ‘Car of the Year 2021’ in the Auto Express New Car Awards, ‘Best Family Electric Car’ at the Carbuyer Best Car Awards 2022, and the overall prize at the 2022 Company Car Today CCT 100 Awards. And now, this all-electric all-star has been crowned the overall UK Car of the Year 2022!

Having already been named ‘Best Family Car’ in the shortlist, the IONIQ 5 was named best car overall by a panel of 29 expert judges from automotive industry titles, including The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, Top Gear and Auto Express.

John Challen, Editor and Managing Director of the UK Car of the Year Awards, commented:

“The Hyundai IONIQ 5 feels like the future of motoring, only it's here today. The design, performance and practicality make it a fantastic proposition for those looking for an EV – and also a very worthy winner of the title ‘UK Car of the Year 2022’.”

With its strapline, ‘Power your world’, the futuristic IONIQ 5 has gained many admirers thanks to its beautiful design, 298-mile range and the ability to rapid recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, thanks to Hyundai's industry-disrupting new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

And it looks the part, too! This ground-breaking SUV truly showcases the beauty of electric innovation. It has an unmistakably sculptural form, including a unique clamshell bonnet, which spans the entire width of the car, and stunning jewel-like LED lighting made from signature 256 Parametric Pixels.

The IONIQ 5 has been a major driver in Hyundai’s success in electric vehicles, with 8,137 units sold in the first two months of 2022, making them one of the most electrified manufacturers in Europe. Indeed, earlier this month, Hyundai announced that they achieved a CO2 performance of 108.0g in 2021 in Europe, well below the European Union’s emissions targets – taking the brand one step closer to their aim of achieving full carbon neutrality by 2045.
