3 Myths About Charging Your Electric Car

Although charging may seem like a whole new world, it's actually very easy to power up. In our latest news article, we dispel any myths you might have heard about charging your plug-in vehicle.

Myth 1: You Can't Charge Your Car In The Rain

While it's a fair question - after all, we're taught from an early age that mixing electric and water is a recipe for disaster - you can charge your EV in the rain with no fear of electric shocks or damage to the car. The plug and socket are carefully designed to protect against water particles, and the charging stations themselves are weather-proofed. This is very good news indeed during what has been a rather damp summer! On that note, it's also completely safe to drive your EV in the rain and take it through a car wash.

Myth 2: Electric Cars Take Ages To Charge

While an EV takes longer to fuel than it would at the pumps, it may be quicker than you think. Depending on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point you can charge an electric car to 80% in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. An average EV will take around an hour on a standard 50kW charge point.

Many EVs have a rapid-charge capability as standard - according to Pod Point, for many electric cars, you can add up to 100 miles of range in about 35 minutes with a 50kW rapid charger.

For general charging, many EV drivers think of charging as they do a smartphone - they simply pop it on charge when they get home from work. Also, by opting to charge your vehicle overnight, you might be able to take advantage of a cheaper tariff.

Myth 3: I Won't Be Able To Find Somewhere To Charge My Car

The UK's charging infrastructure is continuously expanding to meet the growing demand for EVs, meaning it's easy to locate charging points along your desired route.

At the end of May 2023 there were more than 43,500 electric charging points across 25,413 charging locations – a 38 per cent increase in the total number of charging devices since May 2022.

Ultra-rapid charging is an area of particular growth. There has been a 99 per cent increase in the number of these devices in the last 12 months (to May 2023) with more than 8,500 devices now operating across more than 4,500 locations. There are also estimated to be more than 400,000 charge points at home or workplace locations, some of which are available to the public via community or visitor charging.
