How long have you worked in the industry and why did you decide to join Hendy?

I have worked in the industry for 11 years in total, 5 of those with Hendy. Prior to joining Hendy I worked in car sales and then I joined Hendy as a Commercial Sales Advisor. I joined commercial sales because the hours worked far better for me than working every weekend in car sales. I joined Hendy based on their reputation as a good employer and their strong pay structure.

What’s your favourite thing about the job?

The customers. Very cliché answer but it really is the customers that make the job, without them we have no business. We get to talk to such a wide variety of people from all walks of life and all different industries. You could be speaking to a one-man band looking for the last van before they retire in the morning and then talking to a director of a multi-million pound company with a fleet of 200 vans in the afternoon and everything in between!

What do you see as some of the benefits of working in van sales?

The ability to go out and find new business, prospect calling, door to door prospecting, trade events (the list goes on). There are far more avenues that can be explored in commercial and you can really get your name known as the place to buy commercial vehicles in your local community.

You also can gain a great deal of knowledge about company types, how different vehicles or methods of financing may benefit them from an accounting perspective and also basic advantages around VAT and tax that you don’t really get involved with selling cars.

Finally, the hours of work, Monday-Friday with Saturday mornings on a rota basis and NO Sundays!

As a manager, what are you looking for when recruiting a CV Sales Advisor?

Someone with a desire to make a name for themselves within their local area who is willing to continuously learn and better their knowledge, and take the initiative to go out and find their next sale.

What is some advice you’d give someone starting their career in commercial sales?

Have confidence in yourself and the product you are selling. Ensure your product knowledge is comprehensive and constantly updated, listen to your customers and most importantly – smile and have fun with it.
