The more you know about your tyres, the better. You can order your new tyres from www.hendy.co.uk/order-tyres/ but you’ll require some specific details, which can be found on the sidewall of your tyres.
Tyre width
These are the first three digits on the sidewall of the tyre; the width of the tyre is displayed in millimetres. For example, 220 will measure 220mm across the tyre tread from sidewall to sidewall.
Tyre ratio
This is also known as the tyre profile and is the two digits on the tyre sidewall that appear to the right of the ‘/’ after the tyre width numbers e.g. 50.
Tyre rim
This is the rim diameter of your tyre and is presented as a two-digit number that comes after the ‘R’ on the sidewall e.g. 15.
Tyre speed rating
This is displayed and represented with a letter of the alphabet e.g. X. This information is found to the right of the load index; it’s usually the last character in the tyre size sequence.
Did you know that you can perform your own checks on your tyres from the comfort of your own home? Try the 20p test to check the tread depth of your tyres by following these simple steps:
· Place a 20p coin in the main tread channel of the tyre
· If the outer band of the coin can’t be seen, your tyre tread is above the legal limit
· If you’re able to see the outer band of the coin face, then your tyre tread is below the legal limit
· Remember to perform the test in multiple sections of your tyre to get an accurate result
Looking to buy a tyre for your car? Here at Hendy, we offer a huge stock of mid-range and premium tyres for you to choose from that best suits your vehicle’s needs. Plus, our friendly, expert team are always on hand to offer your advice and recommend the best tyres for your vehicle.
Checking your tyres – why is it important?
Road safety – Driving with reduced tyre tread depth also reduces your tyre’s grip. Your stopping distance can be increased by up to 44%, which also increases the risk of collisions. In more extreme weather – heavy rain and ice – worn, underinflated or damaged tyres increase the risk of aquaplaning and skidding on ice. We recommend considering changing your tyres when they reach a tread depth of 3mm.
Avoiding legal trouble – In the UK, the legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm. If you’re caught with an illegal tread depth, you can face a hefty financial fine per tyre and even get points on your licence.
Keep yourself and others safe and secure on the roads with Hendy.
Finding the right tyres
Did you know that there’s a large range of tyre types out there? They vary from budget to mid-range to premium in terms of quality.
Budget – the most affordable tyre type, but they’re often made with the lowest quality materials and technology
Mid-range – more durable than budget tyres and made with higher quality materials and technology
Premium – the most durable tyre type, made from the highest quality materials; and are the best for performance
It’s important that you choose the right tyres to suit your vehicle. Don’t hesitate to get in contact with our friendly, expert team to get the best advice and recommendations so that you can drive away always feeling confident.
The legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, but here at Hendy, we recommend changing your tyres when they reach a tread depth of 3mm.
Ideally, if you have a locking wheel nut, this could help our team secure your car much easier and perform any checks and changes with more efficiency.
Here at Hendy, we strongly advise that your tyre type, size and tread pattern match for both the front and rear.
Markings on the sidewall of your tyres will indicate whether you have run-flat tyres or not. This is usually presented in a code like ‘ROF’, ‘EMT’, ‘ZP’ or ‘ZPS’.
Hendy recommend that you test your tyres at least once a month with a reliable pressure gauge to test your tyre pressure and conduct the 20p test to check your tyre tread depth.
Perhaps you have a query about something else? For example, how should tyre pressure be checked? Which tyre is the nearside rear? What tyre do I need? Why do tyres crack? Our team are here to help with all questions and queries!
