Nissan is highlighting its deep-rooted connection with Britain, celebrating almost four decades of design, engineering and manufacturing in the UK.

The Japanese manufacturer has been sharing the story of its British operations, which stretch back to 1986 and have played a significant role in the development of some of the company's best-known models. The story begins in Paddington, London, home to Nissan Design Europe, where designers from Britain and around the world work on future Nissan vehicles. The company's British engineering expertise is centred in Cranfield, where Nissan engineers have helped develop technologies including those used in the Nissan LEAF, while continuing to contribute to models such as the Qashqai and Juke. Further north, Nissan's manufacturing story is centred on Sunderland, where the company says more than 11.9 million vehicles have been built over 40 years. The plant has become an important part of the North East's automotive industry and wider economic landscape.

Nissan's British journey has included a succession of landmark vehicles, from the Bluebird through to the LEAF, which helped establish a new chapter in the UK's electric-car market. Today, models including the Qashqai, Juke, LEAF and MICRA continue the connection between Nissan and Britain.

The Qashqai, designed in Paddington and built in Sunderland, has been among the UK's five best-selling new cars since 2022, according to figures referenced by Nissan. The Juke was also among the UK's five best-selling cars in 2024. The new generation of LEAF is another part of Nissan's British story, having been engineered in Cranfield and built in Sunderland.

Meanwhile, the return of the MICRA adds another familiar name to the range. Nissan says more than 269,000 MICRAs were sold in the UK over a 20-year period, highlighting the model's enduring popularity with British motorists.

For Nissan, the message is clear: its British operation is about more than simply assembling cars. From the initial design sketches in London to engineering development in Bedfordshire and production in the North East, Britain remains an important part of the company's automotive heritage.
